The Rise of Shadow AI
One of the most immediate concerns is the surge of “Shadow AI”—tools and models adopted by employees without IT or security oversight. Just like Shadow IT a decade ago, this introduces major visibility and control issues. AI tools connected to sensitive data or embedded in business workflows can pose serious operational and compliance risks, often without leadership even realizing they’re in use.
Organizations need policies, access controls, and monitoring in place now, not once something goes wrong.
Innovation vs. Risk: Why This Balance Matters

Where to Start: Applying the NIST RMF
Here’s how to turn NIST’s RMF into action:
- Govern: Establish roles, policies, and oversight for AI use across the org.
- Map: Inventory AI systems, use cases, and data sources. Know what’s running and where.
- Measure: Assess risks in context against organizational priorities. This includes technical, operational, ethical risks.
- Manage: Apply controls, monitor outcomes, and evolve policies based on performance and feedback.
This cycle isn’t one-and-done. It’s ongoing.

AI governance isn’t just about policy. It’s about execution. Tools that help include:
